Dive Log, by Laurant

Neil nicely organised a permit to dive the William Salthouse through Maritime Heritage Vic and Nina organised the troops and the boat with Jeff Giddins (Scuttlebutt) as our preferred operator!!! It happened that on the Saturday the Bass StraitBass Strait branch was diving the same wreck... Unfortunately, believing in the published coordinates, Jeff could not find the wreck and the Bass Strait Branch ended up diving the Eliza Ramsden and the 26m Reef. The wreck of the Salthouse happens to be a few hundred meters South of the published coordinates... Jeff found the wreck after an hour search on Saturday evening at the end of the day and was ready for us to dive it on Sunday. Peter Fear (the GPS/depth sounder back up, in case we could not locate the wreck) and I were picked up from the Portsea side at 7.15am and we had a nice crossing back to Q'cliff to pick up the rest of the crowd. The divers were (in buddy pairs) Clive & Toby, Iain & Yvonne, Charles & Cameron (Bass Strait branch), Chris Law (TDI instructor) and myself. Neil was also present as a deckie and a back up AIMA attendant. The shot was dropped about 2m North of the wreck in about 8m of water and right on slack water. We geared up, did our buddy checks and after a very brief brief jumped in! I had a dive time of about 25' which allowed me two laps of the wreck, cleaning the plaque (on the Southern end of the wreck) on my way for everyone else to see. The wreck is quite interesting and not as sandy as I was expecting it to be. Only the top is visible however and ribs and wooden structures are exposed as well as the cargo of barrels that were containing pork meat... hence all the bones covering the "deck". A nice dive but a very small wreck and I got bored quickly... We were picked up obviously after the dive and went to Portsea to free Pete and at the same time, get some air fills for the second dive (Charles and Yvonne). Not willing to wait for the second slack water of the day, we all agreed to dive the 26m Sub. We made our way through the heads which were quite flat and comfortable and found a private boat anchored (tsk tsk!!) and abandoned (tsk tsk!!) on top of the sub. I offered to swim the shot down but it was decided to use the anchor line that was there and do a free ascent (well... rather a blue water ascent) if the anchor was lifted while we were down there. We all jumped in and all had a ball I believe... I was joined during my safety stops by Toby and Clive and a bunch of funny looking jellyfishes. In the end, we all would like to thank Nina and Neil for a perfect day on the water! I guess we'll have to do it again!!!!! CW wanted it noted that the wreck was visible from the surface!
